# PC stuttering in games: what to check, in order (2026)

> PC stuttering or freezing in games, even on a good gaming PC? Tell stutter, low FPS and freezes apart and check in order: temperature, driver, background apps, game files, memory and shaders.

Most of the time, a PC stuttering in games comes down to one of six causes: high temperature, the graphics driver, background programs, game files, full memory or shader compilation. Before installing any pack or optimizer, find out which one is yours: the fix is different for each, and changing the wrong thing doesn’t help.

## First: what kind of stutter do you have?

- Stutter: average FPS is high, but the picture hitches briefly. It’s almost always uneven frame time: shaders, memory, disk or something in the background.
- Low FPS all the time: the PC can’t keep up with the game’s settings, or it’s losing performance to heat or power limits.
- The screen freezes for seconds or the whole PC locks up: check temperature, driver and memory first.
- The game closes on its own: start with the game files and the driver.
- It only stutters online, with players “teleporting”: that’s the network, not the PC.

## What to check, in order

1. Temperature. With the game open, look at the GPU in Task Manager › Performance (temperature shows up when the driver reports it). A PC that stutters after a few minutes and gets better after cooling down is usually lowering clocks because of heat: clean the dust and check the fans.
2. Graphics driver. Install it from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, never from a generic driver installer. If the stutter started after an update, roll back to the previous version.
3. Background apps. Close what’s heavy while you play: a browser with video, screen recording, downloads in Steam or Windows Update. In Task Manager, sort by CPU and by disk to see what’s using them.
4. Game files. In Steam: Library › right-click the game › Properties › Installed Files › Verify integrity of game files. Other launchers have the same option under another name.
5. Memory. If memory usage in Task Manager gets close to 100% while you play, Windows starts using the disk and the game hitches. Close programs or add RAM; two matching sticks in dual channel usually do better than one.
6. Shaders. In the first match after installing or updating the game or the driver, the game compiles shaders and can stutter. Microsoft explains this happens on first launch or during play, and that a driver update rebuilds that cache. If the stutter goes away after a few matches, that was it.

> **Heads up: What to avoid**
>
> - FPS packs or .bat files you can’t read: many turn off Windows protections and have no way back.
> - Software that tells you how much FPS you’ll gain before measuring your PC.
> - Drivers downloaded from a site that isn’t the manufacturer’s.

## Good or gaming PC stuttering: why?

On a strong PC, high FPS hides the problem: what you feel is uneven frame time, not the average. One 50 ms frame among many 7 ms frames is already a visible hitch, even with the counter showing 140 FPS. That’s why it pays to measure the average and the slow tail (1% low), not just FPS.

## Stuttering in just one game?
