# Valorant lagging with good internet or low ping: network or PC?

> Turn on Valorant’s Instability Indicators and network stats: they show whether the problem is ping, packet loss, your PC’s FPS or Riot’s server. Low ping with packet loss still lags, and Riot says a good connection has near-zero loss. Before you change anything on your PC, test on a wired connection and check Riot’s service status.

A good speed test doesn’t show the whole match. Valorant depends on the route to Riot’s server, and you can lose packets on it even with low ping. The game itself shows where the problem is.

## First, find out what is holding you back

**Symptom, likely cause and what to do**

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Enemies jumping around or shots ignored, with low ping | Packet loss on the way to the server [1] | Turn on the incoming and outgoing packet loss graphs [4] |
| Network Problem icon in the corner | High, constant packet loss or brief disconnects [1] | Restart your router, go wired and turn on network buffering [1] |
| Low average ping, but lag spikes | Max ping spikes that the average doesn’t show [3] | Pause downloads, streaming and cloud syncing [2] |
| The whole image stutters, with normal ping | Your PC’s FPS dropping, not the network [2] | Check Client FPS and follow the stutter guide [1] |
| Low Server FPS icon | Riot’s server running at a reduced rate [1] | It’s on Riot’s side: check Valorant’s status [5] |

## First, let Valorant show you where the problem is

1. Under Settings, General, Other, turn on Instability Indicators. They show up in the top right corner when something crosses a threshold.
2. Under Settings, Video, Stats, turn on ping, incoming and outgoing packet loss and Client FPS.
3. Use graphs instead of text. Since patch 3.03, ping shows both the average and the max, and lag spikes show up in the max.
4. Play a normal match and note what shows up when the lag hits.
5. According to Riot, an icon that pops up and quickly goes away is safe to ignore. What matters is what repeats or sticks around.

## What each indicator means

**Valorant’s instability indicators, according to Riot. The exact thresholds vary by region and patch.**

| Indicator | What it shows | Whose problem it is |
| --- | --- | --- |
| High Average Ping | The round trip to the server is above ideal. You see the world late, and whoever peeks first gets the advantage. [1] | Network: your connection or the route to Riot [1] |
| Network Problem | High, constant packet loss or brief disconnects. Erratic movement and actions that get delayed or ignored. [1] | Network: Wi-Fi, router, cable or ISP [1] |
| Low Client FPS | Your game’s frame rate dropped. The image hops from frame to frame. [1] | PC: CPU, graphics card or open programs [1] |
| Low Server FPS | The server’s frame rate dropped, affecting everyone in the match. You’ll see movement corrections. [1] | Riot: the goal is a steady 128 tick [1] |

## Low ping and lag: packet loss

Ping is the round trip to the server. Packet loss is what gets lost along the way. You can have low ping and still lose packets, and then the server corrects your position and drops actions. Riot says good wireless and most wired connections should have near-zero packet loss at all times.

1. Connect your PC to the router with an Ethernet cable and test again. Wi-Fi suffers from distance, interference and other devices.
2. Turn off your modem and router, wait at least 30 seconds and turn them back on.
3. Pause downloads, streaming and cloud syncing, on your PC and on other devices at home.
4. Turn off VPNs and proxies while you test.
5. Turn on Valorant’s network buffering. Riot says it reduces what the game demands from your connection.
6. If the loss continues on a wired connection, take the data to your ISP, with a tracert. According to Riot, when wired doesn’t help, the usual cause is physical damage to the ISP’s cables.

## When the lag is your PC

Riot separates network lag from a game that stutters. If the whole image freezes and FPS drops, the problem is your PC, even with low ping. In that case the Low Client FPS icon shows up and the network graphs stay clean. On the PC side, Riot also suggests a clean boot and setting up your firewall for the Riot Client. Then follow the stutter guide or the main FPS guide.

## When the problem is on Riot’s side

Low Server FPS is on Riot’s side, and Riot says it keeps its servers at 128 tick. Outages and maintenance show up on Riot’s service status site, by game and region. If it shows an incident for Valorant, changing your PC won’t fix it.

## What Rise does in Valorant

Everything here shows what changes before you apply it.

- **Windows, graphics card and network.** What matters in any game: power plan, background programs and your PC’s Windows, graphics card and network settings. Each optimization shows what changes before you apply it. (Optimizations · Rise Basic and Premium)
- **Before-and-after Benchmark.** Runs the same 3D scene before and after your tweaks and compares average FPS, 1% low and stutters on your PC. (Benchmark · Rise Basic and Premium)

## What Rise does not do in Valorant

- Doesn’t improve your internet’s route to the server.
- Doesn’t touch Vanguard and doesn’t inject anything into Valorant.
- Doesn’t promise an FPS number: measure before and after on your PC.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is Valorant lagging when my internet is fine?

A speed test doesn’t show packet loss or the route to Riot’s server. Turn on the packet loss graphs under Settings, Video, Stats. According to Riot, a good connection has near-zero loss; if you see loss, test on a wired connection and restart your router.

### Valorant lags with low ping. What is it?

With low ping, there are two suspects left: packet loss and an FPS drop on your PC. The Network Problem icon points to the first. The Low Client FPS icon points to the second.

### What is network buffering in Valorant?

It’s a setting that reduces what Valorant demands from your connection. Riot suggests turning it on when the Network Problem icon shows up often.

### How do I know if Valorant is down?

Open Riot’s service status site and pick Valorant and your region. It lists outages and maintenance. The Low Server FPS icon also points to a problem on Riot’s side.

### Can a PC optimizer lower my ping in Valorant?

Rise tunes your PC’s network settings, but it doesn’t change your internet’s route to Riot’s server. If the packet loss comes from your ISP, the fix is on their end.
