CS2 stuttering with high FPS or on a high-end PC: how to fix it

The FPS counter shows an average. Stutter lives in the frame that takes longer than the rest, and that frame disappears inside the average.

Guide written by the Rise team. The steps work with or without Rise; the facts about the game come from the sources at the end of the page, with the date we checked them.

Short answer

CS2 stuttering with high FPS is uneven frame time: the average is high, but some frames take much longer. Turn on CS2’s telemetry and see whether the spike shows up in frame time or in network problems. If it’s frame time, the cause is on your PC: a background program, a shader compiling, or FPS out of sync with your monitor.

Why high FPS is misleading

FPS is an average of frames per second. Frame time is how long each frame took to reach the screen, in milliseconds. If almost every frame is fast and one is slow, the average stays high and you still feel the stutter.

CS2’s telemetry shows both side by side. The ms number on the left is the worst recent frame time. The number on the right is your average FPS. That’s why they almost never match, and the one on the left is what gives the stutter away.

How to turn on CS2 telemetry

  1. Open CS2’s settings and go to "Game" › "Telemetry".
  2. Under "Show frame time and FPS", pick "Always".
  3. Under "Show network problems (ticks missed due to loss / jitter)", pick "If conditions are poor".
  4. Set "Frame time warning threshold" slightly above the frame time you usually get. When the number turns red, you had a spike.

In the console, cl_showfps 1 draws FPS at the top of the screen. It shows the average, so it’s good for low FPS, not for finding stutter.

Is it your PC or your network?

When the stutter hits, check which number turned red. Red frame time points to your PC. A red network problem with normal frame time points to your connection. Steam Support itself recommends this test to tell the two apart.

The most common causes on your PC

  • Background programs. A browser playing video, downloads and updates compete with CS2 for the CPU. Steam Support says to close anything you don’t need in Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
  • Full memory. With little free RAM, Windows starts using the disk instead, and FPS takes the hit.
  • Shaders compiled on the fly. CS2 compiles some shaders when it needs them, and Valve has already fixed several stutters caused by this. In 2023, Valve itself pointed to an AMD driver update for this kind of stutter.
  • A program trying to get into the game. Trusted Mode blocks programs that try to inject into CS2. According to Steam Support, when a program keeps trying many times per second, the game can lose performance, and some try right when the mouse moves.

FPS above your monitor: the stutter that looks like a jump

When the game renders more frames than your monitor shows, the two drift out of sync. Every so often, the game delivers two frames before the screen shows one, and the image seems to skip. Valve calls this microstutter.

With a G-Sync monitor and an NVIDIA card, Valve recommends turning on G-Sync, V-Sync and Reflex together. FPS ends up slightly below your monitor’s refresh rate, and that’s by design. Without G-Sync, V-Sync adds delay to your aim, as the main guide explains.

NVIDIA Reflex removes the frame queue when the graphics card is the limit. With Boost, it keeps the GPU clock high when the CPU is the limit. Its focus is delay: stutter from background programs or shaders gets fixed at the cause.

What Rise does in CS2

Everything here shows what changes before you apply it.

  • Before-and-after BenchmarkRuns the same Rise 3D scene before and after your tweaks and compares average FPS, 1% low and stutters on your PC. The 1% low shows whether a tweak changed stability, not just the average.Benchmark · Rise Basic and Premium

  • Reflex and Anti-Lag 2Turns on CS2’s own latency option when it’s off, on an NVIDIA or AMD card. The Boost setting you chose stays as it is. On an Intel card, it doesn’t touch anything.Inside the CS2 preset · Rise Premium

What Rise does not do in CS2

  • Doesn’t touch VAC and doesn’t inject anything into CS2.
  • Doesn’t improve your internet’s route to the server.
  • Doesn’t promise an FPS number: measure before and after on your PC.

Frequently asked questions

Why does CS2 stutter even on a high-end PC?

Because FPS is an average and stutter is one slow frame. Turn on "Show frame time and FPS" in CS2’s telemetry. If frame time spikes when the stutter hits, the cause is on your PC, even with high FPS.

How do I know if the stutter is my PC or my internet?

Turn on frame time and network problems in the telemetry. If frame time turns red, it’s your PC. If only network problems turn red, it’s your connection.

Does updating my graphics driver help with CS2 stutter?

It can help when the stutter comes from shader compilation. In 2023, Valve pointed to an AMD driver version that fixed this kind of stutter in CS2. Measure before and after, on the same map.

Does V-Sync cause stutter in CS2?

Without V-Sync and with FPS above your monitor’s refresh rate, you can get microstutter: the image seems to skip a frame. With V-Sync and no G-Sync, your aim gets more delayed. With a G-Sync monitor, Valve recommends G-Sync, V-Sync and Reflex together.

Does Trusted Mode make CS2 slower?

According to Steam Support, the drop shows up when a program tries to get into the game many times per second and gets blocked. Close programs one at a time until you find the culprit, instead of playing outside Trusted Mode.
