FiveM stuttering, low FPS or texture loss: how to fix it
FiveM is heavier than GTA V on its own: every server sends cars, clothes, maps and scripts to your PC. That’s why the same computer runs well on one server and badly on another. Start by finding out what’s causing the stutter.
Guide written by the Rise team. The steps work with or without Rise; the facts about the game come from the sources at the end of the page, with the date we checked them.

Short answer
Most of the time, FiveM stuttering comes from running out of video memory or from heavy server content, not from a faulty PC. Lower Texture Quality, MSAA and extended distance, raise the Extended Texture Budget step by step, clear only the server cache folders and track your FPS with cl_drawperf. If only one server stutters, the load is coming from that server.
First, find out what is holding you back
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Map disappearing, holes in the ground, blurry textures | Not enough video memory for the textures, or the server uses files that are too big[3] | Lower Texture Quality and MSAA and adjust the Extended Texture Budget (Texture loss section)[2] |
| FPS drops in a busy city or during events | Lots of server cars, clothes and maps loading at the same time[12] | Lower grass, extended distance and population (Busy city section)[5] |
| Runs well on one server and badly on another | Each server sends its own content and can raise the game’s streaming limits[9] | Compare on another server at the same time of day; if only one stutters, the load is coming from it |
| Freezes on the loading screen or after a server update | Old or corrupted server files in the cache folders[7] | Clear cache, server-cache and server-cache-priv, never game-storage (Cache section) |
| Character teleporting, voice cutting out | Network: high ping or packet loss, not the PC[1] | Check ping and packet loss with cl_drawperf; if they’re high, the problem is the connection |

How to see your FPS in FiveM
Before you change anything, measure. FiveM has two console commands for this that any player can use.
- In the game, press F8 to open the console.
- Type cl_drawfps true and press Enter: an FPS counter shows up in the corner of the screen.
- For more detail, type cl_drawperf true: it shows FPS, ping, packet loss, CPU and GPU usage and the graphics card temperature.
- Write down the numbers at the same spot on the map, before and after each change. To turn it off, change true to false.
Commands like resmon, strdbg and netgraph show up in videos, but they only work in FiveM’s developer mode. For regular players, cl_drawfps and cl_drawperf are enough.
Texture loss: map disappearing and holes in the ground
GTA V loads textures bit by bit as you move around. When video memory runs out, it stops loading some of them: the ground disappears, buildings get blurry and your car falls into the "hole". The FiveM server itself warns when a car, clothing or map file is too big and says it can cause exactly this loading problem.
RAM matters too. With less than 12 GB of RAM, FiveM doesn’t expand the memory it uses to load the map (the code says doing so would break 4 GB PCs). That’s why laptops and 8 GB PCs suffer more. Closing your browser and other programs before playing helps.
- Open the pause menu, go to Settings and then Graphics.
- Set Texture Quality to Normal. It’s the setting that uses the most video memory, and it has little effect on FPS.
- Turn off MSAA and Reflection MSAA: MSAA is the second-biggest video memory cost, and the reflection one barely changes the image.
- Raise the Extended Texture Budget step by step, watching the video memory bar next to it, without going past yellow. On a weaker PC, test the default first.
- Still short on memory? In the console (F8), str_maxVehicleTextureRes 512 caps the resolution of car textures. The default is 1024, and FiveM says lower values ease memory use at the cost of quality.
The texture budget is a workaround, not the cure: on the official forum, the answer is that the real fix is for the server to use smaller files. There are also reports that the value goes back to default after restarting the game, so check the setting when you launch.
Low FPS in a busy city
At the square, at an event or downtown, the game draws dozens of cars and players with the server’s clothes and vehicles. Cfx.re itself has linked lots of custom cars nearby to the "city bug". These are the GTA V settings that weigh the most at that moment, according to NVIDIA’s performance guide:
| Setting | Suggestion for FPS | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Extended Distance Scaling | All the way down | Very expensive; recommended only for the most powerful PCs[5] |
| Grass Quality | Normal | Very heavy in areas with vegetation; at the higher levels, grass gets shadows[5] |
| Population Density and Distance Scaling | Lower | The cost of distance drops when there’s less population[5] |
| High Detail Streaming While Flying | Off | Costs more in the city than in the game’s benchmark[5] |
| High Resolution Shadows | Off | Relatively high cost[5] |
| MSAA and Reflection MSAA | Off | They use video memory; the reflection one barely changes the image[5] |
| Texture Quality | Normal, if you’re short on video memory | Heavy on video memory, light on FPS[5] |

If FPS only drops on one server, the load comes from its content: the server picks the game build and the files it sends, and it can raise the loading limits. In that case, settings help, but they won’t fix everything. It’s worth telling the staff what cl_drawperf showed.
Stuck on loading: how to clear the FiveM cache
When FiveM freezes on the loading screen, closes as you join or loads the wrong textures after a server update, the downloaded files may be outdated. Clear only the server cache folders:
- Close FiveM completely.
- Press Windows + R, paste %localappdata%\FiveM\FiveM.app\data and press Enter.
- Delete the cache, server-cache and server-cache-priv folders.
- Don’t delete the game-storage folder: it holds the game data and your Rockstar login. Don’t delete the whole FiveM folder either.
- Open FiveM again. Joining each server takes longer the first time, because the files are downloaded again.
Clearing the cache fixes loading freezes and wrong textures, but it doesn’t raise FPS. If you see "Error loading component", the FiveM documentation says to delete the caches.xml file in the data folder.

FiveM Legacy or Enhanced, and what your PC needs
Since July 21, 2026, there are two versions: the usual FiveM, which runs on GTA V Legacy, and FiveM for GTA V Enhanced, in early access and with bugs flagged by Cfx.re itself. If you play on a Legacy server, you need GTA V Legacy, and vice versa. The requirements published on fivem.net:
| Version | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| FiveM (Legacy) | Windows 10, Core 2 Quad Q6600, 1 GB graphics card, 4 GB of RAM[8] | Windows 11, i5-3470 or FX-8350, GTX 660 or HD 7870 with 2 GB, 8 GB of RAM[8] |
| FiveM for GTA V Enhanced | Windows 10, i7-4770, GTX 1630 or RX 6400 with 4 GB, 8 GB of RAM[8] | Windows 11, i5-9600K or Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT with 8 GB, 16 GB of RAM[8] |

The minimum requirement gets the game to open, not to run smoothly on a full server. On an RP server with lots of content, video memory and RAM make more of a difference than the CPU.
What Rise does in FiveM
Everything here shows what changes before you apply it.
- FiveM video presetWrites the graphics settings to the file FiveM actually reads (gta5_settings.xml, or GTA V’s settings.xml on older installs), within the options in the GTA V menu and based on your PC’s video memory. Turns off V-Sync, motion blur and the audio frame limiter. Saves your previous settings and goes back in one click.Games › FiveM · Rise Premium
- FiveM cacheDeletes only the cache, server-cache and server-cache-priv folders, with FiveM closed. game-storage, nui-storage, mods, plugins and CitizenFX.ini stay. It doesn’t raise FPS: joining each server the first time downloads the files again.Tools › FiveM · Rise Premium
- Prepare PC for screenshare checkShows the services that server screenshare checks look at, like SysMain and PcaSvc, and restores the default for anything turned off, even by another program. Nothing is deleted or hidden: staff see the PC as it is.Tools › FiveM · Rise Premium
- Stretched resolutionIf you play stretched, Rise writes the resolution to the game file and restores the previous one whenever you want.Games › FiveM · Rise Premium

What Rise does not do in FiveM
- Doesn’t inject anything into FiveM or GTA V, and doesn’t install mods, plugins or ReShade.
- Doesn’t touch the FiveM anticheat, CitizenFX.ini or the plugins, mods and citizen folders.
- Doesn’t change the server: if FPS drops because of a heavy server script or car, that still depends on the server.
- Doesn’t improve your internet’s route to the server (ping and rubber banding).
- Doesn’t hide anything from staff during a screenshare check.
- Doesn’t promise an FPS number: measure before and after on your PC.
Frequently asked questions
How do I increase FPS in FiveM?
Measure with cl_drawperf true in the console (F8). Then, in the Graphics menu, set Extended Distance Scaling all the way down, grass to Normal and population lower, and turn off MSAA, Reflection MSAA and High Detail Streaming While Flying. Close heavy programs before playing. If FPS only drops on one server, the load comes from its content.
How do I fix texture loss in FiveM?
Set Texture Quality to Normal, turn off MSAA and raise the Extended Texture Budget step by step, without the video memory bar going past yellow. If you’re still short on memory, str_maxVehicleTextureRes 512 in the console caps car textures. With less than 12 GB of RAM, FiveM doesn’t expand its loading memory, and closing other programs helps.
What’s the best Extended Texture Budget value?
There’s no single value: it depends on your graphics card’s video memory and on the server. Raise it step by step while watching the video memory bar, without going past yellow. On a weaker PC, test the default first, because a bigger budget can squeeze memory.
Can I delete the whole FiveM folder to clear the cache?
No. Delete only cache, server-cache and server-cache-priv, inside %localappdata%\FiveM\FiveM.app\data, with FiveM closed. The game-storage folder holds the game data and your Rockstar login, and it should stay.
Does clearing the FiveM cache increase FPS?
No. Clearing the cache fixes freezes on loading and wrong textures after a server update. Joining each server takes longer the first time, because the files are downloaded again.
Why does FiveM run well on one server and stutter on another?
Each server sends its own cars, clothes, maps and scripts to your PC and can raise the game’s loading limits. The same PC loads different things on each one. Compare at the same time of day and show the staff what cl_drawperf showed.
Can a PC optimizer get you banned on FiveM?
What leads to a global ban is a program that injects into FiveM, like menus and injectors. Rise doesn’t inject anything and doesn’t touch the anticheat or the FiveM folders: it adjusts Windows, the graphics card and the video file the game itself writes. Even so, every server has its own rules, and the staff have the final say.
Is it internet lag or low FPS?
Use cl_drawperf true. If FPS is fine and ping or packet loss is high, the problem is the connection: a character teleporting and voice cutting out are network signs. If ping is normal and FPS drops, the problem is the PC or the server’s content.
